As some of you may have spotted on our social media channels a few weeks back, a DeLorean DMC-12 paid us a visit a recently for a little Hot Wheels inspired vinyl makeover. Given that today is none other than Back to the Future Day, it seems only necessary to take a moment & revel in all the brushed steel glory that has become one of America’s most beloved automotive pop culture icons. Granted, it can’t travel through time, but this Hot Wheels DeLorean is still a childhood dream incarnate.

Even today, a DeLorean DMC-12 is quite a sight to behold. Despite performance woes, it’s hard to deny a DeLorean’s cool factor and poster appeal. It’s the kind of car that makes people stop, stare, and smile. It defies generations of car enthusiasts, uniting many in a love of boxy styling, futuristic fanaticism & undying lust for gull-wing doors. Back in 2012, Hot Wheels even went as far as to introduce a limited edition “doors up” model of the DeLorean DMC-12, limited to just 4000 pieces dedicated fans and collectors. It’s been a staple to the Hot Wheels line-up since early 2010, with multiple versions releasing periodically. This year, the DMC-12 was even featured as a Hot Wheels “Super Treasure Hunt” car, with a special dark red Spectraflame paint job and a unique graphic pack.

For our Hot Wheels DeLorean recreation, we were tasked with making a true-to-scale rendition of the graphics featured on the Metalflake Silver model from 2014. While it might not be as insane as re-creating a Back to the Future time machine, it still required quite a bit of attention. To keep with the worked metal look, we opted to use black brushed vinyl for the side stripes with a satin metallic silver “DMC” overlay to match the bare body color as close as possible.

To complete the Hot Wheels-esque stripe pack, a set of satin carmine red slashes were added to the front fenders & on the corresponding hood stripe.

Even though this particular example of the DeLorean DMC-12 was a little rough around the edges when it came in, a few simple vinyl additions worked wonders for making it a truly unique piece to motor around in. Sure, it might not have the power to make a run at other “sports cars” of the era, but who needs to go fast when most people think you can traverse the space-time continuum?

Of course, we couldn’t have made it happen without having the real thing on hand. Fortunately enough for us, the client supplied his own Hot Wheels DeLorean for artistic reference – ours is still in the box, unharmed, tacked to the collection wall upstairs.
