Audis are our bread and butter here at NorthWest Auto Salon. I cant remember a day that has gone by without at least one Audi coming though our doors. From R8s to A4s, we get them all. Like this Audi S4 we did a write up on several months ago, much of this traffic is due to our involvement with Josh Decker and the QuattroWorld.com online Audi community. In the past we have sponsored QuattroWorld events and Josh has brought us his project cars. Due to an unfortunate incident with his late Audi All Road, Josh was in need of a new family hauler and when he found this S6 avant, he knew he found his replacement. Being that it was black and the paint had seen better days, it was easy to tell that a trip to NorthWest Auto Salon was in order for an Enthusiast Detail with Interior Detail and 35% window tint. Just a week or so after purchase, Josh came in bright and early Wednesday morning, dropped off his new S6 and left for work in our SMART courtesy car.
The first step in this process is our basic 24 step exterior hand wash

Agitating and cleaning the door jambs and trim is important to make sure that all loose debris is removed when the final exterior wash happens

Cleaning the wheels before the wash takes place is also important so as not to spray debris off the wheels and onto the paints surface before claybar

After all the door jambs, cracks and wheels were cleaned, it was then time to clean the exterior of the vehicle

After the vehicle was washed, it was time for clay bar. This process removes any stubborn surface contamination that may have been left over from the wash process. This is important because anything left on the vehicle during polishing will be ground into the paint and damage the surface.

While the paint may look clean, the clay paints a very different picture here. All the dirt you see in the clay would have been polished into the vehicles finish if one tried to detail it without completing the clay bar process.

After the vehicle was clay bared, it was time to inspect the paint and form a game plan for how to achieve the type of correction both we and Josh were looking for.

Before we polish the entire car, we do a test section to find out what kind of pad/polish combination will work best for this particular vehicles finish. After two stages of polish, these were the type of results we would achieve throughout the entirety of the car.

Before polishing, the seams, edges and trim are taped up for protection from excess polish

Finally it was time to begin the correction process

After we achieved the correction we were going for, it was time for a coat of sealant wax

Sometimes detailers will do whole write ups and show the entire correction process without a true “after” of the paint to prove the sort of correction they achieved. Here is what the paint looked like under a halogen lamp after the entire process (just like we did at the beginning).
