Sometimes it’s hard to believe it has been over half a century since General Motors first started producing what many consider some of the quintessential muscle cars of the “Glory Days.” Back in ’64, the Pontiac Division began crafting their answer to the needs of the speed-obsessed youth market – hoping to emerge with a beefed up “Super Tempest,” the GTO was born with 389 cu inch Pontiac V8, and branded as a sportier trim option for the original Pontiac LeMans. Tipping the scales right around 3,500 lbs and boasting a solid 325 hp, the GTO was a definite contender for just under $5,000 in its day – and also an opportunity for sales that Chevy simply could not ignore.
Early versions of the Chevelle carried the Malibu SS badges on their rear quarter panels and distinct in house “style numbers” denoting their hard top/convertible trim lines. Fitted with a 283 rated around 220-horsepower, newborn Chevelles were ample but lacking the punch of Pontiac’s beefier 389 – and thus, Chevrolet was forced to break the 330cc rule and step it up to a 396 for the ’66 model in order to compete with the emerging muscle car market.
So flash forward to 2011, and here we are with two very fine specimens from those days of glory; a 1968 Pontiac GTO & a ’66 Chevelle, black as the night & ready for a bit of TLC before they hit the showroom floor at Cats Exotics. Both cars had seen better days, but it didn’t take more than an Enthusiast Detail, Vac, Wipe Down and a fair share of elbow grease to get these GMs looking as good as they did the day they rolled off the assembly line.
