Since conception in 1929, Ferrari S.p.A. has been developing & crafting some of the finest road going sports coupes & roadsters in existence. Starting with the 125 S in 1947, the factory in Modena has created a number of roadster & drop top variants of their most iconic models – the 21st road going model of which, is the F430 Spider. With strong visual cues from it’s older sibling the 360 & significant technological upgrades, the F430 features tail lights from the high ranking Enzo as well as a freshly engineered 4.3L V8 pushing up 483hp and 343 lb-ft of torque. Keeping it glued to the road is a highly intelligent computer operated electronic differential and “Skyhook” suspension – truly an automobile with plenty of bells & whistles, and the power to back it up.
When we received this Rosso Scuderia F430 Spider, the owner was open to whatever aesthetic direction we thought best, asking only that the exterior finish be that of the matte variety. We opted to go full Stormtrooper & bring the wrap together with custom cut matte black accent pieces, black powder coated wheels and dark window tint – a look not even the strongest blast doors could contain.

The first order of business on this F430’s full wrap was to remove the wheels to be prepped for powder coating, wrap the engine bay lid, and prep for tinting. The lid is one of the flattest, squarest surfaces on the F430, and the quickest piece of film to apply. Our window tint is a wet installation process using ceramic film, designed to deflect light, heat, and harmful UV rays – not only keeping you & your car more comfortable in transit, but also adding a bit of flare to the overall appearance.

With the lid covered, the wheels removed, and the tint in progress, it was time to line the cups housing the F430’s Enzo tail lamps. After carefully removing the lights, Jeff applied a thin strip of film on the seams & lips of the light wells.

In the mean time, Myron set to work scrubbing down the calipers & disks so they’d look their best behind the newly powder coated rims.

Once the cups had been covered and the brake lamps replaced, Jeff moved onto the jams. Door wells & sills can be particularly tricky given their curvy, form fitting surfaces – to ensure maximum coverage, we roll back and remove rubber seals and fittings to ensure the best wrap possible.

With the calipers glistening & film wrapping nearly all the way to the door fronts, the earliest glimpses of the F430 Spider’s new aesthetic began to take shape. It was time to tackle the precise process of smoothing the vinyl over the rear quarter panels, side skirts and door fronts. The 430’s body lines are a blend of soft & hard edges, subtly hinting at the smoothness of the 360 and the sharper sculpting of the race- bred Enzo – with such a dynamic form, getting the finish fit of the vehicle’s wrap is vital!

Side one of the Rosso Scuderia Spider was reaching completion, so it was time to shift gears and begin covering the bonnet, fenders, and front fascia. Before the matte white film can be fit and cut, it is first necessary to remove any additional badges and clean all contact points ensuring maximum coverage & adhesion of not only the film itself, but also the badges re-fitment upon completion. Once the initial prep is done, the lining pieces of the hood can be trimmed and secured.

Hood wraps are always more than a one man job. Stretching the material for maximum coverage over the entire front end of any vehicle is difficult, so having the assistance of Blake and Steve was vital to keeping the vinyl taut so that Jeff could make precise cuts without risking damage to the F430’s surface.

Before we knew it, the hood had transformed and the front fenders were covered, leaving only the bumpers bare & awaiting the wrap!

Front bumper coverage on the F430 is also a bit tricky. First, the matte white was pulled over all the inlets and the small center diffuser, carefully tailored to fit and lined with enough margin to eliminate any butting edges.

The second bit involved a bit more delicate lining and trimming of the matte black inserts and diffuser coverage. The change is subtle, but it definitely lends more definition to the F430’s factory aero components. Carefully spotlighting the inlet walls with an LED light, the matte black excess could be cut back and fitted right up to the mesh.

Upon completion, the look is nice enough to be mistaken for a factory enhancement! Not overpowering, but just enough accent to bring a bit more depth to the F430’s front clip. With the wheels back from coating, Myron set to mounting & torquing them in place.

Now for the back side – starting with the bumper surface and working his way up, Jeff set to work forming & fitting the matte white into the tail lamp housings, flush to the black edging. Seams & rear face completed, Blake carefully trimmed a matte black accent piece for the rear grill sill, giving the 430’s tail end an aggressive wide-mouth look.

Time to refit the badges, clean up & admire the craftsmanship in the light tunnel!

Feeling more than satisfied with the results, we carefully positioned the F430 Spider in the cyclorama for a few after shots. When we do wraps here at NorthWest Auto Salon, the goal is to have a nearly undetectable final product and the most satisfying compliment is when people insist that it is paint… The transformation came together excellently, and the F430’s owner was delighted with the new matte finish of his complete vehicle wrap.
