He’s been called “the king of car reviews” by Car & Driver — many refer to him as “the driver’s seat of youtube.” All we know is SaabKyle04 is a tried & true car nut, and just the kind of guy we like getting a visit from. We heard Kyle was in town shooting a handful of reviews with our friends over at AutoNation, so when the opportunity presented itself to get the spotlight on the infamous matte purple Citroen DS21 & Blake’s 21 window VW Samba, we had to make it happen.
Kyle arrived bright & early, ready to shoot even before we were. After a few adjustments, a quick Basic Detail & a hypnocap upgrade, it was time to get down to business. Like a well-oiled machine, he set to work cranking out his signature angles & no-nonsense approach to capturing the Citroen just like the other vehicles featured on the SaabKyle04 channel.

Carefully combining over every single inch of the DS with the camera, Kyle spent a good part of the morning shooting every bit of detail he could. The videos he produces aren’t quick, sub-3 minute vignettes, mind you. We’re talking 20-30 minutes of in-depth examination, exploring every intricacy & component of the featured vehicle. Some even include quite a bit of seat time!

After learning the ins and outs of the DS21’s unique suspension setup as well as how to operate it, filming the full travel of the Citroen’s variable ride height was a must. Couple the odd, floating nature of the car at full lift with the “rotorelief” hubcaps, and we’re talking a whole new level of wacky. Kyle has featured everything from daily drivers to supercars, but the matte purple DS21 was the first Citroen ever to make the cut.

Once Day 1 of shooting was in the bag, we wrapped with a quick trip to Dick’s Drive-In for some burgers & brainstorming on the following day.
With the sun already setting behind the shop & work winding down, Blake positioned his 21 window VW Samba out in the parking lot for Day 2. After a quick intro & rehearsing a few more factoids about the bus, Kyle was more than ready to tackle the shoot.

Sporting Wilwood big brakes, a brand new Porsche motor swap, 1-off roof rack and some period correct surfboards to tie the look together, Blake’s VW is well on its way to becoming a perfect weekend cruiser.
