For any automotive enthusiast, picking the right new car can be a difficult choice to make. It’s a very multifaceted decision. Many drivers desire a bit of daily dual purpose in both performance & driveablity, which tends to narrow the scope quite a bit. On rare occasions such as this, a client comes along that simply can’t live without the best of both worlds. Enter, the Chevy Corvette Z06 & Tesla Model S P85D. Two equally capable machines, engineered to put power down and look great doing it!
As with any new vehicle purchase, a little preventative care can go a long way towards maintaining exterior & interior surface conditions. After taking delivery, the cars were scheduled for nearly identical New Car Detail packages, including Premium XPEL Ultimate paint protection, Prestige Film Technologies Spectra PhotoSync 45 window tint, as well as Gtechniq C1 + EXO, and an Interior Shield treatment! With both vehicles on deck & the morning sun breaking through the shop, it was time to get started. The Z06 waited patiently outside while the guys set to work on prepping the P85D.
While the Z06 took a bath, Josh worked away on the P85D’s single stage polish. Before long it was sporting a showroom shine & looking all the more ready for our Premium XPEL paint protection package!
As luck would have it, the guys finished up with both New Car Details at nearly the same time. We pulled the Z06 into the install bay first so Tim could begin applying film & fine tuning the XPEL Ultimate for a perfect fit.
As with all our XPEL Ultimate paint protection options, the Premium package for both the P85D and Z06 are custom cut and re-designed in house. While we do access XPEL’s database to see what’s readily available kit-wise, most every paint protection package we offer is modified using proprietary techniques to maximize coverage, improve appearance, and ensure film adhesion in otherwise hard-to-reach areas.
Once the the cars were all wrapped up with XPEL Ultimate PPF, they both received our top-tier window tint film, Prestige Spectra PhotoSync 45. Prestige Film Technologies Spectra PhotoSync is without a doubt the most advanced window tint film on the market. Offering a unique, solar-activated coating, PhotoSync will adjust the amount of light it transmits when exposed to certain wavelengths of the solar spectrum. For example, the Prestige SPH45 installed on the Model S & Corvette will transition to 38% VLT in direct sunlight!
As soon as the paint protection & window tint had cured up, the guys set to work on treating both vehicles to a selection of the finest surface preparations & finishing seals from Gtechniq. Gtechniq is an industry leader in hydrophobic coating systems, offering a broad selection of products that will perfect & protect surfaces of every variety. First up, the Corvette & Model S received our Interior Shield package, which includes a combination of Gtechniq I1 and L1, depending on the surface type. The Interior Shield is an essential upgrade for any New Car Detail, helping ensure all the fresh fabrics & hides stay cleaner, longer.
To give those glossy red exteriors an added bump of scratch-resistant shine, the Z06 & Model S also received a dual layer application of Gtechniq C1 + EXO. C1 Crystal Lacquer is a quartz coating that will chemically bond to paintwork, becoming a new surface layer that’s exposed to the elements. In doing so, C1 provides incredible resistance to swirling and light scratching, while simultaneously making the exterior resistant to dirt & repellent against road grime. To top it all off, we applied an additional layer of Gtechniq EXO to maximize hydrophobicity & add even more glass-like gloss. The end result is an incredibly resilient exterior that looks wet to the touch, staying clean with minimal maintenance. If you really want to make your New Car Detail last, a stacked treatment of Gtechniq C1 + EXO is just one of the many preventative measures we recommend from day 1 of ownership!
Before saying goodbye to the dynamic duo, we made sure to get the Corvette & Model S in the photo studio so we could play around in post with some composite editing. It’s a trick to stick the color balance when shooting cars within a similar range of hue, and these two were no exception!
There’s no doubt that we could find room for either vehicle in our hypothetical dream garage, but in reality, playing favorites is much more difficult. The raw, sport-centric nature of the Chevy Corvette Z06 undoubtedly appealing, but the Model S P85D is far from being a slouchy saloon.
Ultimately, either car deserve to share equal seat time from any owner, whether it’s on the daily or during a hot lap session. Where the Z06 lacks in translatable traction, it makes up with aggressive, youthful styling & the kind of guttural noise that can only be produced by pistons. At the opposite end of the spectrum, the P85D patiently waits for any unsuspecting victims that may mistake it for a baseline Model S. With seating for four & a quarter mile sprint that could scare a new Corvette owner, it becomes a little more clear how a potential buyer might ask themselves “why not both?”
Inside, the Z06 sports a flat-bottom wheel similarly sized to the P85D. Adorned with plenty of high quality carbon trim, Chevy’s latest incarnation of the Corvette feels every bit worth the near $80k MSRP. Tack on a set of paddles that engage easy rev-matching, and you’ve got yourself a serious contender on the track that’s dying to eat up asphalt. The carbon footprint might be larger for the Z06, but it seems safe to say it would be hard for anyone not to enjoy putting the pedal to work for those 6.2 liters under the hood.
As we mentioned in our P85D First Look gallery, the interior refinements of the upgraded Model S are minimal in nature but still quite impactful overall. There’s a center console now, and the optional black suede headliner works wonders for bringing a proper luxury-sport feel to the cabin. Additionally, the updated steering wheel & net-gen seats are a vast improvement from the earlier models, both in comfort and build quality.
The Z06 was the first to leave while the sun was still shining, so it was the perfect time to go topless. With a few minutes to spare, we popped the roof off & fit it snugly under the rear hatch. Once the roof is removed, the C7 Z06 feels even more outrun-ready; it’s a silhouette that would look right at home cruising down the coast.
Once the traffic died down a bit & the sun dipped behind the shop, it was time for the Tesla to say goodbye as well. The deep red multi-coat exterior gleamed with wet gloss in the dusky evening glow as we watched the P85D slip away silently into the night.
One thing is for sure, working on machines such as these side-by-side is always enjoyable. We’re proud to be serving the NorthWest’s Tesla Model S & Chevy Corvette communities to the best of our abilities, and we can’t wait to see what else our clients have in store for 2015.
