The first of Tesla Motors Model S P85Ds have begun trickling out for delivery, and the influx of full body XPEL paint protection wraps is just getting started. As some readers may remember, we pioneered the first Total Coverage XPEL Stealth wrap in Seattle on the standard P85+ just over a year ago, and we’ve been lucky enough to get up close & personal with XPEL Ultimate installations on a handful of Ds in the first weeks of 2015!
Tesla Motors P85D is a step beyond the prior Performance+ models of yesteryear. While the dual motor setup is offered in a less sporty version, it would be tough to pass up the 691hp option as long as you can swallow the price tag. The P85D might not have the range of its lesser powered siblings, but putting down a 3.2 second 0-60 time is definitely something to shake a stick at for a car that tips the scales at nearly 5,000 pounds of curb weight.
Given the sheer number of Model S cars on the roads around Seattle in the last year, this P85D needed a little something extra to stand out among its siblings. Beyond the Total Coverage XPEL paint protection package wrapping every inch of the paintwork, we worked in a chrome delete vinyl wrap treatment to give the P85D a more aggressive look while maintaining minimal bling. The rear branded trim was one of the trickiest components, requiring us to digitize & modify a custom pattern with cut-outs for the Tesla lettering to shine through.
The Total Coverage XPEL Ultimate paint protection package is just like a full car wrap with Stealth film, except without the satin finish. We’ve carefully crafted & digitized our Tesla patterns to be as complete as possible, with plenty of roll over & no unnecessary seams, ensuring maximum paint protection is achieved without the slightest aesthetic compromise.
Besides visible clarity & unrivaled resistance to damage, the benefits of a self-healing XPEL Ultimate wrap are incredibly valuable to a brand new vehicle like the Model S P85D. Total Coverage ensures that your factory finish can remain unscathed with minimal routine care for up to 10 years under the XPEL manufacturer warranty while you cruise comfortably knowing rocks & road debris won’t stand a chance.
In addition to the full XPEL Ultimate wrap & chrome trim deletion, we tied it all in with a set of glossy, blacked out mirror caps, stems & side marker inlays.
The gloss black vinyl addition is a subtle touch that we started implementing way back with the very first Stealth Tesla Model S wrap, and it’s definitely caught on with Tesla owners who are looking for a simple OEM+ style modification. Perhaps in the future, Tesla Motors will offer a blacked out or painted side marker option from the factory!
Along with the performance upgrade, Tesla has significantly stepped up interior build quality & available options with the D. As some Model S fans may remember, the first generation were offered with just ONE headliner option in a beige “white” – not exactly a desirable choice for owners with performance models & black leather interior. Now, potential owners can spec their Model S with a black alcantara suede, request heavily bolstered next-gen seats for the driver & passenger, and even order up executive seating for the party in the back.
Tesla Motors even worked in a grippy, flat-bottom wheel for the proper sports car feel & revised the mid-tunnel to incorporate a center armrest complete with cup holders!
Overall, it seems the few revisions Tesla made to the Model S did quite a bit to bring quality up to snuff & make it all the more competitive among other luxury sport sedans near the price point. As the Model X & Model 3 loom on the horizon, this introduction of a dual-motor system could turn out to be quite the growth spurt for America’s EV heavy hitter.
